The Tour de France was a lengthy journey organized by Catherine de Médicis between January 1564 and May 1566.
The goal of the trip was to present the fourteen-year-old Charles IX to the French, thus cementing his authority. Another reason was to check on the implementation of the Edict of Amboise, which had been signed on 19 March 1563, ending the first War of Religion. Henri de Navarre accompanied the long procession, which consisted of between 8,000 and 10,000 people, and twice as many horses. It gave him the opportunity to discover France – both its riches and the hardships of its people.
