La Gaucherie was Henri's Protestant tutor from 1559 to 1566 (except between March and November 1562 when Henri, thanks to his father's intervention, returned to the Catholic faith). He instilled in Henri a taste for exercise, which gave him remarkable resistance that would serve him well in later life.
