Louis II de Lorraine was the son of François de Guise (assassinated in 1563) and the brother of Henri I de Guise, known as "Henri the Scarred". Elevated to cardinal of Lorraine in 1578, Louis de Guise then played an active role in ations by the hard-line Catholics within the Holy League. He was arrested when his brother was assassinated at Blois in 1588, and was put to death the following day, 24 December 1588, on the orders of Henri III.
