Henri IV - An unfinished reign

Glossary

Wars of Religion

A series of civil conflicts fought between 1562 and 1598. At first they opposed Catholics and Protestants (Huguenots). Later moderate Catholics allied with Protestants against Catholic extremists. Eight wars are generally distinguished, which were interspersed with fairly fleeting periods of peace, each made official by an edict of pacification.
