1580-1637
Charles I de Gonzague, duc de Nevers, was a member of the House of Cleves, and thus in the line of succession for the duchies of Clèves and Juliers (1609), although Henri IV forbade him to take up arms to press his claim. He turned his attentions to Charleville, where he built the Place Ducale, a replica of the Place Royale in Paris (now the Place des Vosges).
