1549-1588
Henri I de Guise, prince de Joinville, became duc de Guise in 1563 upon the assassination of his father François de Guise, by the Protestant Poltrot de Méré. Nicknamed "Henri the Scarred" by his father due to a wound he suffered in battle in 1575, Henri I de Guise quickly became the leader of the hard-line Catholics and the Holy League. Seeking to free himself from Guise's grip, Henri III had him killed at Blois on 23 December 1588.
