The kingdom Henri IV left behind on 14 May 1610 was quite different
from the one he discovered on the tour de France
he had made at the side
of his cousin Charles IX between March 1564 and May 1566. Demographically,
geographically and economically, France underwent constant change throughout
the life of the king. Nevertheless, there were some continuities that would help
set the scene for Henri IV's reign.
