Historians generally define eight separate Wars of Religion between
March 1562 and April 1598, the date of the Edict of Nantes.
This distinction would perhaps surprised Henri's contemporaries,
who lived through one long "time of troubles", which only chroniclers and
(later) historians would take pains to quantify and number.
These successive wars punctuated the lives of many who,
like, Henri, knew only rare moments of peace – between his
birth in 1553 and his death in 1610, he lived through more than 20 years of war.
