In 1584, the unthinkable happened.
François d’Anjou,
the youngest son of Henri II, died without leaving a male Valois heir, making
Henri de Navarre heir to the throne. This was intolerable to hard-line Catholics,
and the prospect of seeing a Protestant wearing the crown of France made
emotions run high in the final years of the reign of
Henri III.
