Henri IV - An unfinished reign

Although he was not as crude as his popular image made him out to be, Henri IV was not an "artist-king" and even less a "musician-king". Although dancing was an essential part of every aristocratic education, the king practised it very little. Nevertheless, his artistic policies were the sign of a genuine cultural project, and he knew – in the face of still-formidable difficulties – how to create a favourable environment for creation. In terms of music, his reign witnessed the apex of the great polyphonic styles of the Renaissance, as well as the emergence of new forms of expression – testimony to a society that was become increasingly refined.
