In his Histoire du roy Henry le Grand (1661), Hardouin de Péréfixe spoke the following words to the young Louis XIV: "Sire, the respect and love that all good kings have always retained for the happy memory of King HENRI THE GREAT, your grandfather, make him as present in their minds as if he still reigned […]. But to this one might add, when one considers Your Majesty, that he has taken on new life in your person." Thus was the memory of Henri IV – the unaffected and popular king, who ahd ushered in a now-vanished golden age – perpetuated and embellished throughout the 17th century.
